The 2022 Met Gala might have seen Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson walk their second red carpet together, but the true spotlight was on her dress. Sure, the Met Gala is the biggest night in fashion, so it comes as no surprise. But the dress Kim Kardashian wore has a history behind it. This is what you need to know about it.

What you need to know about Kim Kardashian’s 2022 Met Gala dress

Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala dress is worth millions. Why? It is the dress that Marilyn Monroe wore while singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. The dress is gold and has 6000 hand-sewed crystals. To pay tribute to Marilyn Monroe, Kardashian dyed her hair blonde. She told Vogue that the effort took 14 hours. With her efforts, she expressed that she also lost 16 pounds to fit into the dress.

The dress is housed in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum in Orlando, Florida. It was purchased by the museum at an auction back in 2016. Because of the history that dates back to President Kennedy’s 45th birthday, the dress was transported in a temperature-controlled, 68-degree vault.

During the night’s festivities, Kardashian switched into a replica of the dress after walking the steps of The Met. A conservationist from Ripley’s accompanied her throughout the night to assist with the dress.

According to Ripley’s, Monroe originally asked costume designer Jean Louis to make a dress only she could wear. She told Louis, “I want you to design a truly historical dress, a dazzling dress that’s one-of-a-kind, a dress that only Marilyn Monroe could wear. The original sketch was drawn by Bob Mackie. It was his first job after college.

As of today, the dress is valued at over $10 million.
