The Mikaelsons returning has been a long time coming. Finally, Hope has been reunited with her family. But, this time, it is for reasons larger than a mere visit.

Rebekah, Freya, Kol, and Marcel have the job of trying to restore Hope’s humanity as it rests on the brink of returning and putting Klaus’s ashes to rest.

Due to an off-screen Vincent doing an astral projection spell to bring Hope to New Orleans, Hope arrives just in time for her father’s long over-due funeral. But is it enough to bring back her humanity? Hope spends time with her family, discussing where to rest Klaus’s ashes while fighting against her humanity.

However, the Mikaelson family is not deterred, encouraging Hope’s emotions without forcing them out. But, one of the final triggers has the group ask Hope to decide where to spread Klaus’s ashes. At this point, Hope’s emotions are starting to show, and her final decision is to bring the ashes to Mystic Falls, where Hope can be closer to Klaus. Her family agrees with the decision and claims it gives them another excuse to visit Hope.

Although her family brings Hope’s humanity to the surface, it is Hope herself that has the final confrontation. No-Humanity Hope fights against her humanity in a battle for control of Hope’s body. Finally, Hope’s humanity succeeds, killing her emotionless self and taking back control of her body.

However, her No-Humanity counterpart is not gone for good, taking Hope’s humanity’s place as a figment only she can see, claiming the war between them is not over.

Still, the Mikaelson family’s return does mention a significant detail of the last few years. Unfortunately, they have not been as present in Hope’s life as they should have been since Klaus and Elijah’s deaths.

Rebekah, Freya, Kol, and Marcel address the time they have lost with Hope and wish to make it up to her. But is that a promise they will follow through on? Legacies is approaching a war against the Gods that places Hope’s life in danger. Yet, the Mikaelsons seem to know nothing of the impending battle.

Although there is still time in the season for the Mikaelsons to make more guest appearances and possibly help in the war, this shows how Legacies has used or ignored Hope’s family previously.

It is never addressed how the Mikaelsons, other than Freya briefly, responded to regaining their memories of Hope after she came out of Malivore. Although Freya stops Hope’s heart to activate her vampire side, Freya disappears entirely from the episode before Hope wakes up. Why would Freya have left while her niece was unconscious and amid a major transition?

Although it may have been harder to believe that Hope could have been kidnapped if Freya was in the room, that does not excuse how Freya continues to be missing in the following episode and is not involved with finding Hope as the Super Squad battles Malivore and his monsters.

The Mikaelson family has a lot of time to make up for. However, allowing them to be the final push that brings Hope’s humanity back certainly works in their favor.
