Malia Obama will take her post-undergrad career to Amazon. The former first daughter has signed on to join Donald Glover’s writing team in an upcoming television series. The series is part of an overall deal Glover signed with Amazon Studios in February 2021. About the project, it will reportedly follow a “Beyoncé-like figure.” It currently has a working title of Hive.

The role will mark Obama’s first official writing role.

About the decision, Glover expressed that  “she’s focused, and she’s working really hard. He added that he feels that “she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon.” Her previous writing experience includes interning for the Weinstein Company, working on the drama series Extant, and working as an intern on the set of HBO’s Girls.

Joining the team is Janine Nabers, known for her work on Watchmen, Away, and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce as the show’s writer.

The writing team will be a bit more diverse with Glover’s younger brother Stephen, also joining the team. Stephen applauded his brother’s decision to have Malia join the team.

In a statement to Vanity Fair, he said: “Donald always says perspective is important, and people with different perspectives are important for a writer’s room. And for sure, she definitely has a unique perspective on everything. Listening to her stories and having her involved really gave us a lot of good ideas.”

While there is no official production date for the project, it is the start of a bright future in Obama’s post-grad career. There are currently no additional projects the young writer has signed on to as of now.
