At long last, Sony announced the revamped PlayStation Plus, their answer to Xbox’s Game Pass. It’s been heavily rumored since the end of 2021, only ramping up throughout the first few months of 2022.

We finally have a solid look at how the new PlayStation Plus is going to work, combining the PS Plus and PlayStation Now into one tiered offer. There are still some finer details that need clarification, but we know how the tiered structure is going to work.

PlayStation Plus Essential

This is the cheapest tier and is essentially what the current iteration of the PS Plus is. You’ll get two monthly downloadable games, cloud storage, and online multiplayer. Seriously, nothing changes.

Here’s the price breakdown: $9.99 monthly / $24.99 quarterly / $59.99 yearly.

PlayStation Plus Extra

This is the next step up. You get all of the benefits of the Essential tier and a catalog of up to 400 PS4, PS5, and third-party partner games. The extra games are also downloadable.

Here’s the price breakdown: $14.99 monthly / $39.99 quarterly / $99.99 yearly.

PlayStation Plus Premium

This is the most expensive tier and provides you with the benefits of the Essential and Extra tiers. It also will add up to 340 PS3 games that will be available via cloud streaming, as well as games from the PlayStation, PS2, and PSP consoles. The cool thing about this tier is that there will be time-limited game trials, so you can try a game out before you buy it.

Here’s the price breakdown: Price: $17.99 monthly / $49.99 quarterly / $119.99 yearly.

Honestly, it doesn’t feel like anything is too groundbreaking for the subscription service. What will make or break it for many gamers is just what additional games are included in the Extra and Premium tiers. Are we talking about constantly having to stream games, or will some of them be downloadable?

The good thing about this is that if you don’t have the budget to hop to one of the higher tiers and currently have a PS Plus membership, nothing is going to change for you.

When the new subscription service launches, there’s a solid list of games being offered, including Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Returnal.

We’ll have to see how the rollout goes and what tweaks, if any, Sony makes along the way.
