Maria Ressa

In 2021, Maria Ressa was one-half of the duo to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. In doing so, Ressa became the first Filipino individual to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

And as someone who actively shares news (even if it is in the entertainment field), Maria Ressa is in many ways a hero. If you are wondering why that is, it is because she was honored for her work to safeguard journalism and freedom of expression. Back in 2018, her work in combatting fake news with other journalists around the world led to her being named TIME’s Person of the Year!

Of course, the fact that she went from a TIME Person of the Year to a Nobel Peace Prize Winner is proof that Ressa is someone we need to be paying attention to. And of course, it is in part because of her Nobel Peace Prize win that we think of her as one of our women making history right now.

On the Nobel Prize page highlighting Ressa, they explain that the reason she received the award (in partnership with her co-winner Dmitry Muratov) was because of, “their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”

And if that doesn’t feel like a history-making reason to be included here, then I don’t know what does.
