Can Lizzie control her new powers? “Follow the Sound of My Voice” has Hope put Lizzie through a variety of tests to see how well the new Heretic can control her vampire abilities, including compulsion, strength, and senses.

A carnival is perfect for testing skills without standing out too much. While Hope portrays each vampirism ability flawlessly, Lizzie has trouble controlling her strength or using compulsion. However, when asked to use her hearing, Lizzie is more interested in a crying girl than the voice she is meant to look for.

When Lizzie and Hope find the girl, it addresses Lizzie’s difficulties with not only physically being apart from Josie but the loss of their connection when Lizzie transitions. “Follow the Sound of My Voice” also has Lizzie confront an unexpected truth of her own.

With the loss of Josie’s presence, Lizzie does not want Hope to lift the sire bond, uncertain if she can feel anchored without it. A sire bond can be a dangerous connection, especially with Hope’s humanity off. Lizzie must trust Hope enough to be willing to leave the bond in place.

As for the Salvatore School, the students are confronted by Aurora as she infiltrates the school to discover a way to kill a Tribrid. Although most of the students know nothing, Cleo, still affected by the truth weed, confesses that she is the one who knows about the red oak tree.

Aurora dives into Cleo’s mind, discovering her inspiration to kill Hope, which results in Aurora visiting Ben. As a consequence of Aurora and Cleo’s interaction, Cleo finds herself uncertain of what ways Aurora’s actions may have impacted Cleo. Cleo had admitted to being annoyed that everyone runs to her for a way to fix a problem, but now it is uncertain how inspiration will work for Cleo moving forward.

The truth weed also affects Finch and Jed. For Finch, it is relatively simple as she addresses her agitation of not being aware of important information. However, for Jed, it causes him to confront new feelings.

Is there a possible romantic future for Jed and Ben? Jed admits to having complicated feelings for Ben that he could not entirely understand. Jed further revealed that he did not know what it meant until he and Finch believed Ben was in danger. Jed confesses to liking Ben and is still processing his feelings during his conversation with Finch.

Although Josie has left, “Follow the Sound of My Voice” found a reliable way to use Finch as a friend to Cleo and Jed while addressing that Josie had previously kept Finch in the loop.

As for MG and Ethan, they finally get to talk. MG and Kaleb show up at Sheriff Mac and Maya’s house to deal with calls about a ghost in their home. However, Kaleb and MG believe the spirit is Ethan, unwilling to reveal himself as supernatural.

Ethan does not seem excited by the prospect of telling Maya the truth, but a heart-to-heart with MG shows Ethan another perspective. MG tells Ethan of the time he accidentally killed Landon and his feelings in the aftermath, even though Landon was revived soon after.

The idea of second chances and knowing that MG would be Ethan’s family encourages Ethan to tell Maya the truth about the supernatural world.

“Follow the Sound of My Voice” showed many characters face a variety of revelations. However, each of them may help strengthen the character relationships and storylines.
