Snowpiercer picked up its third season six months after the explosive season 2 finale. “The Tortoise and the Hare” had its work cut out for it as the episode must navigate two trains and the events and character relationships on both.

Layton and his crew are continuing Melanie’s work of searching for hot spots with the hope of a new Eden on the horizon. Eventually, the remaining population may return to land after years of living on the rails.

But, it is not as quick and straightforward as those would hope. Six months after starting their mission, Layton and his friends are still in the midst of work, but “The Tortoise and the Hare” also reveals that the train hosts other passengers who were on their part when it split from the overall conjoined vehicle.

What is the better bet, continuing their journey or returning to Wilford? Alex has a brief moment of uncertainty regarding this question and the best hope of survival in the long term. Although her final decision is to continue Melanie’s work, what it takes to survive has always been a question hanging over the heads of those in charge.

However, the big plot twist comes in the form of a survivor hidden in snow and ice-covered building. Layton comes across the survivor and brings the person back to the train with him. What does this person know, and how could anyone survive the freeze all these years? Is there a chance there are more survivors hidden amongst the rest of the world?

Elsewhere, Wilford and Ruth hold their opposing ends on the other train. While Wilford retains control, the resistance is still alive, with Ruth an active part of keeping it together until Layton’s return, whenever that will be.

From the looks of things, the lifestyles on the train are not what they used to be, and Wilford seems more interested in catching up with the other train.

Snowpiercer has a lot of potential to grow out its third season, especially when it comes to the hint Layton gets in his vision of a tree that could be hope for their future.

Is there more to Melanie’s season 2 conclusion than anyone knows? Will there be survivable land for the passengers to re-create a world? Who will end up in total control of Snowpiercer? Season 3 has plenty in store for what is coming next.
