If you are a millennial or belong to the Gen Z age group, you grew up with the best-selling novels by Nicholas Sparks.  I guarantee you have seen one of the eleven films that have been developed based on his work. With the 20th anniversary of A Walk to Remember, one of the most popular Nicholas Sparks film adaptations having just occurred, let’s look at some other adaptations.

Films based on Nicholas Sparks books

A Walk to Remember

While the film was met with mostly negative reviews, it proved to be a box office success and a developing point in the career of Shane West and Mandy Moore.  Fans praised the performance of the two for telling the story of the rebellious Landon Carter and struggling Jamie Sullivan ever so innocently. Nicholas has spoken about how the plotline was inspired by his sister who died of cancer in 2000. In her journey, she met a man who wanted to marry her no matter what the future may bring.  He also has spoken about how the movie stays true to the novel in most aspects. The main difference is that the timeframe changed from the 1950s to the 1990s.

The Notebook

The Notebook is loved just as much as A Walk to Remember. To this day, the film is one of the most popular movies in pop culture. It is also one of the highest-grossing romantic dramas of all time. Even though it originally received mixed reviews at the box office, it continues to appear in many “best of” lists. It tells the story of a young couple who fell in love in the 1940s.

The Last Song

The Last Song was the first time Nicholas adapted a script for the film. The film is also known for being when Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth met. Although the approach to the film was different, it was one of the few Nicholas Sparks films that were with negative reviews. Regardless, it proved to be a box office success. The film follows Veronica’s summer (Miley Cyrus) as she is sent to reconnect with her father.
