As we get closer to a new year, it’s time to recap a few critical moments. Some of our favorite songs are reaching their tenth anniversary. They strangely describe the year that was 2021. Here is how.

1. Taylor Swift – “I Knew You Were Trouble”

“I knew you were trouble when you walked in,” yelled the entire world at COVID-19. 2021 was the year the pandemic was supposed to be over. And unfortunately, as much as we want it to be over, new variants of the original virus are being discovered. No matter what side of the political spectrum you are in, it’s safe to say we can all agree we knew this was trouble from the start.

2. P!nk – “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”

Pink sings in this song “I think I finally had enough”. Didn’t we have enough this year? She does a great job of celebrating her emotions.  The line “blow me one last kiss” is the best. It is time to “blow one last kiss” to 2021 and move forward to 2022.

3. Maroon 5 – “Payphone”

Distance was still a prevalent issue in the year 2021. And although the meaning of this Maroon 5 is not a literal payphone, there are still some references to distances and the hardships to distance and trying to deal with a difficult relationship. If you had to deal with a long-term relationship this year, this might be the song for you.

4. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft Wanz – “Thrift Shop”

This year “fast fashion” continued. Stores like Fashion Nova and Shein continued to be on the rise. We wanted fashion affordable, quick, and easy. That is representable of what this song talks about. Sure, those shops aren’t thrift shops. But they are the essence of one!

5. The Lumineers – “Ho Hey”

“I belong with you. You belong with me.” The song is simple and the message is simple. That is the message we should take into 2022. Whether it was the best year or the worst, keep going. It is ours for the taking! The year belongs to us.
