I would be lying if I didn’t say I sighted when I heard the news. “Another dance show?” Just like when we have another reality show or another singing show appear, having another dance show seemed repetitive. With Shakira as the lead, it made me even angrier. “Wasn’t she a judge on The Voice at one point in time?” Why is Shakira getting a dance show? Why do we need another dance show? How would this one be any different? This is what you need to know.

Shakira’s new dance show

The show is called Dancing with Myself and is inspired by social media dance trends. Competitors will be given dance challenges taught by Shakira and celebrity dance trainers and have to learn them and adapt them with their style. They will be “isolated in their own pods” for a short period to perfect their performance before dancing for a live audience. The studio audience will decide weekly eliminations as the challengers work to compete for a cash prize.

The series will debut on NBC and comes after the network canceled Jennifer Lopez’s dance series World of Dance. Lopez’s series focused on finding the best professional dancers. FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance had a similar mission.  Because both shows are not on air, there is a gap for dance content.

About the much-needed show, Shakira said in a press release:   “I’m excited to be a part of a dance competition that places such a high value on creative movement and how it translates into personal expression, not to mention how it contributes to a sense of community,” Shakira said. “I’ve personally been blown away by some of the talents I’ve seen thanks to people having access to their platforms through social media. Dance has been an incredibly potent force throughout my life, and I’m eager to show the world how transformative, empowering, and fun it can be.”

Fans may remember Shakira’s viral “Girl Like Me” dance craze that took over TikTok for months. If that is a determinant of the success of the show then it is bound to be a success!
