Warning: This post contains spoilers from the premiere of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That

And Just Like That took us all by surprise on the December 9th premiere of the Sex and the City reboot. Viewers had already seen in the trailers that all of the major characters, except for Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones, had returned. So fans were understandably happy and looking forward to a nostalgic stroll down the streets of Manhattan, but not so fast. Nostalgia was the last thing on our minds when one of the most beloved characters on the series took his final bow on the first episode.

Chris Noth’s character, Mr. Big (a/k/a John James Preston), was in the middle of an intense workout on his Peloton exercise bike when he collapsed and died from a heart attack. Viewers were flabbergasted, and Peloton took a sharp hit with its market prices. According to CNBC,  shares of the company hit a 52-week low of $37.67 in trading Friday and ended the day down 5.4% at $38.51. On Thursday, the day of And Just Like That‘s premiere, shares fell 11%.

But And Just Like That fans are angry with the series, not Peloton

HBO Max has to have expected the negative feedback from the sudden passing of Mr. Big, and while Chris Noth undoubtedly had a say in what happened to his character, that hasn’t stopped fans from expressing their anger on social media. And some are even bailing on the show before it can make it to episode two.

The responses came in hard and fast after the episode aired, with fans of the original series saying how much they already hated the new series. The aftereffects of the death of a major character, one that fans had been dedicated to since 1998, are still ongoing. Though Peloton’s prices have dropped, it’s sufficient to say HBO Max has more to be concerned about than the exercise equipment company does.
