First trailer arrives for A Discovery of Witches season 3

A Discovery of Witches season 3 is coming in January 2022 and the first trailer reveals a tantalizing first look at all of the action. Season 2 is based on The Book of Life, the third book in author Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy. A revolution is coming but with the stakes higher than ever, it’s a battle that Diana Bishop and her friends and family must win.

Witch Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and her vampire husband Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode) have returned from 1590s Elizabethan England to the present, where they discover all that has transpired since they left.

The trailer begins where season 2 left off, in the moment when Peter Knox kills Emily Mather. Matthew says that he will make Knox pay for it.

The Congregation is bearing down on Diana and Matthew, hunting them with relentless fury upon discovering that Diana is pregnant – with twins. The future of the vampires, witches and daemons rests with unlocking the secrets of Ashmole 782, but it won’t be easy.

There’s no question that season 3 has a much darker tone than the first two seasons. Now that blood has been shed, the gauntlet has been thrown and there’s no turning back. This time, though, Diana has fully realized her power and she’s able to fight back with vengeance.

Emily’s death has galvanized the group, and there’s no question that change must happen or creatures will perish in even greater numbers. The Book of Life holds the answers but the answers are hidden, and the birth of Diana’s twins could hold even more answers about the future of creatures.

One thing that stands out in the trailer is Matthew’s pride about his wife’s ability to handle anything that comes her way. “I’m ready,” she says. “Yes, you are,” he replies. This is a departure from season 1 Matthew who felt he had to protect Diana at every turn when they first met. He knows she’s powerful and he doesn’t try to hold her back, rather he supports her in every way he can.

A Discovery of Witches season 3 is coming in January 2022. Like last season, new episodes will likely debut on the UK’s SkyTV first before airing a few days later on Shudder and Sundance TV in the US, both of which are available on AMC+.
