HBO MAX adds Pennyworth to its DC arsenal, with a big change for S3
Pennyworth, the drama which chronicles the early years of Bruce Wayne/Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth during civil-war torn London when he worked for Thomas Wayne, is the latest DC Comics property to head to HBO MAX. With the move, the Warner Bros. produced series has been given new life, getting renewed for a third season, along with the move from EPIX to HBO MAX.
The jump to HBO MAX doesn’t come as that much of a surprise. Warner Bros. Television produces the series and both HBO MAX and Warner Bros. are brands under the Warner Media umbrella. Pennyworth’s jump to the in-house streaming platform was announced at a DC Fandom event, with the 1960’s-era fictional London drama starring Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth, joining DC Comics properties Titans, Doom Patrol, and Peacemaker.
What can we expect for season 3 of Pennyworth?
Probably the biggest revelation from the DC Fandom Livestream was the five-year time jump that will begin Pennyworth‘s Season 3. The upcoming season’s description reads “The civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains,” per Variety.
HBO MAX has commissioned 10 episodes for the third season, much like Pennyworth’s first and second seasons. No word on timing yet, but filming is already underway and you can expect it sometime in 2022.
A bonus of the third season debuting on HBO MAX is that the first two seasons will be available for viewing on HBO MAX, early next year.
With the time jump, it seems that Pennyworth is moving closer to the Batman timeline DC fans are amply familiar with.
Alongside Bannon, Pennyworth also features Ben Aldridge (Thomas Wayne), Emma Paetz (Martha Kane), Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater, and Simon Manyonda (who plays Lucius Fox). The DC series is executive produced by Bruno Heller, Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon, and John Stephens.
