Spotted: A season 2 renewal for HBO Max’s Gossip Girl revival
By Lacy Baugher
Get ready, Upper East Siders: Gossip Girl isn’t going away any time soon.
Though the HBO Max revival of the popular CW teen drama will return for the back half of its twelve-episode first season in early November, that won’t be the last we see of Julien, Zoya, Audrey and friends. The series was just officially renewed for a second season.
The renewal news isn’t a huge shock, given the fact that Gossip Girl is such a buzzy legacy title to begin with and, according to Deadline, the series broke records during its first weekend of availability, becoming the streamer’s most-watched original title.
A season 2 pretty much feels like a no brainer in light of all that.
HBO Max renews Gossip Girl for a second season
Set nearly a decade after the original Gossip Girl website went dark, the HBO Max revival follows a new group of elite Manhattan teens at the infamous Constance Billiard School. But their stories look quite different this time around. First, this iteration of the story is much more diverse, with multiple lead characters of color, several openly queer characters, and characters from different socio-economic backgrounds. (Not many, but that’s still better than before!)
And Gossip Girl is no longer a website, but an Instagram account, capitalizing on the rise of social media influencers and the constant pressure young people face to publicly share their lives in the name of amassing fame and followers.
The result? Lots of drama.
There’s no news yet on many the specifics of Gossip Girl season 2 – we don’t know how many episodes it will have or when production on the new season will begin. We have to assume that the majority of the main cast will be returning, and who knows – maybe we’ll even see some cameos from the original series’ cast. (The revival has repeatedly referenced famous names like Serena, Blair, and Dan – and even introduced Georgina Sparks’s son as a character in his own right.)
Gossip Girl will return to HBO Max for the final six episodes of season 1 in November.
