Fox’s new series Our Kind of People shines light on the black elite
Television producers Karin Gist and Lee Daniels are teaming up to bring a fresh new drama series to the Fall television season. Fox’s Our Kind of People starring Morris Chestnut and Yaya DaCosta is set to premiere this September. Inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s book, Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class, the show will take a look at the state of race and class in America and the celebration of Black resilience and achievement.
It’s very rare that a show centers around a group of elite black people. Due to typecasting darker-toned Black women and men are usually portrayed as prostitutes, thugs, or drug addicts, while lighter-toned/mixed people are not, so it’s refreshing to see a show with darker-toned leads seen as elite.
Here’s more on what we know about the series
Our Kind of People is filled with secrets
Leading lady Yaya Dacosta portrays Angela Vaughn. A mother and entrepreneur, Angela owns a natural hair care product line. Another thing rarely seen on TV is black natural hair, but that’s a story for another time!
She moves back to the Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard community for family reasons and soon realizes some of her mother’s shady secrets, that are sure to hurt the family name.
In May, the America’s Next Top Model alum announced her departure from Chicago Med after six seasons.
"“After six amazing seasons of working with some of the most dedicated people in the business, learning wild medical jargon, growing as an actor and as a person… my time as April Sexton on ‘Chicago Med’ has come to a close,” she shared in a farewell post on Instagram. “I’m going to miss everyone dearly, and of course, all of you who watch the show religiously and have also become part of the One Chicago family.”"
Our Kind of People: A star-studded cast
DaCosta and Morris Chestnut aren’t the only big names who are a part of the series cast. Our Kind of People also stars Lance Gross (Tyler Perry’s House of Payne), Joe Morton (Scandal), and Rhyon Nicole Brown (Empire). Raven Goodwin (Being Mary Jane), Nicole Chanel Williams (Boomerang) were recently added to the cast in a recurring role. Newcomer Alana Bright makes her acting debut in the upcoming series.
