The second season finale of Tuca & Bertie brought Tuca’s emotions to a head, and the underlying issues in her friendship with Bertie amidst a devastating and historic flood in Bird Town.

After the awkward events of last week’s Bird Town fair, Tuca has finally returned to her apartment where she anxiously awaits word from Kara after their decision to move in together.

While Bertie is happy to have her best friend back home, Tuca’s obsession with Kara distracts from a more immediately pressing issue–the ensuing flood. Tuca refuses to do anything without Kara and Speckle is at his house, leaving Bertie to crisis manage the situation alone.

Thankfully, all of Bertie’s time in therapy comes in handy as the flood brings Tuca’s hidden emotions to a front–literally. A storm flash electrifies Tuca’s cups of emotions she hides behind her toilet, bringing them to life as ghosts floating above her head.

As the two friends escape the apartment, Bertie helps Tuca exorcise her feelings while trying to figure out how to get them to safety, all while Tuca is still determined to find Kara, which leads them to Kara’s lighthouse.

Of course, the writing is on the wall with all of Kara’s avoidance. When they finally find her on a cruise ship across from the lighthouse, she is blissfully ghosting Tuca, and it’s clear the relationship is over.

In a heartbreaking denouement, Tuca finally admits how sad she is and lets Bertie comfort her in a refreshing change of pace. As they make their way to safety, Bertie finally confronts the codependency issue between them.

After a rocky season for both friends, it’s nice to see how far they’ve both come emotionally. For Bertie, she finally faced her issues through therapy and her own fears of letting her BFF be independent from her. For Tuca, she opened up to a new person and got her heartbroken, but learned how to be vulnerable.

Thankfully, our best bird friends will be back for another season of hijinks, adventure, and heartfelt friendship, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.
