There are some times when we really feel bad for Kevin. Over the course of Riverdale, he has been relegated to the sidelines, struggled with accepting himself, had issues with relationships, and basically just seemed like a typical example of the tortured gay trope.

And episode 13 of season 5, “Chapter Eighty-Nine: Reservoir Dogs,” really brought home the idea that Kevin’s past is going to continue haunting him until he himself finds a way to move forward. After all, we not only see him back in the middle of the woods looking for a random hookup (a perfect call back to Season 1 of Riverdale), but we even get to see his exes having a romantic night together.

That’s right, Fangs and Moose having drinks and cheese together. Of course, Kevin ends up finding this out in the worst way possible – by attempting to talk to Fangs and walking in on their tête-à-tête.

Riverdale reminds us all that the past is never truly in the past

With Kevin, the drama and trauma of the past never seems to stay in the past. And he is not the only one dealing with this, as even Archie seems to be mired in the past thanks to flashbacks of wartime which lead to him actually beating up a guy who is apparently training dogs to fight.

Between Kevin’s inability to move forward emotionally or romantically and Archie’s apparent PTSD, it looks like Riverdale has a serious problem. And that problem has to do with its leading men. (Of course, Jughead is currently missing, but even he has issues that need to be addressed at some point too.)

We want Kevin to be happy, but Riverdale doesn’t seem interested in letting that happen. And even though we supposedly end on Kevin and Fangs agreeing to be friends and that things are okay between them and Kevin is finding a way to move on with the help of Cheryl, we can’t help but think everything is not alright.
