Freeform’s witchy drama Motherland: Fort Salem renewed for a third and final season

Looks like we have some good and bad news coming out of the Motherland: Fort Salem camp. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Freeform series will be getting a third season. However, season 3 will also be the drama’s final outing.

Just a day before the second season finale, the network announced the renewal, with the president of the company, Tara Duncan, expressing excitement for the show’s final chapter. “We’re excited to bring Motherland: Fort Salem back for a third season. I am grateful to Eliot [Laurence] and the entire Motherland team,” she said in a statement. “They have created a truly immersive mythology that has resonated with fans since day one, and I know this last chapter will continue to deliver.”

The show is set in an alternate timeline where the witches of Salem were not all executed and in fact became vital participants in the Revolutionary War. From then on, witches were members of service to the United States, acting as their army. The acting General of the witch army is Sarah Alder, one of the original Salem witches who signed the pact with the United States. The show focuses on three recruits as they learn to work together while uncovering the seedy underbelly of this powerful organization and its enemies.

I for one am pretty bummed about this news. I’m a sucker for a well done, witch-centric series and this show was just an interesting watch. The lore alone makes you want to dive in headfirst and learn more about the witches and their origins. That’s in between the teenage drama of dating and sex of course but still!

Series creator and executive producer Eliot Laurence expressed his gratitude for having the opportunity to end the series instead of a cancellation. “I can’t wait to bring season three to the world. We plan to ramp up the insane stakes of the finale with an epic, scary, satisfying ride, all the while getting deeper into witch’s ancient origins.”

He also made sure to shout out the fans of the series, adding that he’s so grateful for them as well. “We are so grateful to Freeform for the opportunity, and to our fans — your love is palpable, wait till you see what we have in store,” the statement concluded.

At least we have a whole lot to look forward to in this final chapter.
