Get a first look at Florence Pugh in Netflix’s period thriller The Wonder
By Erin Lynch
According to Deadline, Netflix’s period filmThe Wonder has officially begun filming! The Florence Pugh-led period psychological thriller is currently in production in Ireland, where its story is set. We don’t know a ton about the film just yet, but there are a few things we’ve learned about it.
The film is based on the book of the same name by Emma Donoghue. Set in The Irish Midlands in 1862, the story is about a young girl who stops eating and somehow lives. The novel is inspired by the Victorian era “fasting girls” who claimed to live without eating for months.
Here’s what we know about the plot.
"English nurse Lib Wright is brought to a tiny village to observe eleven-year old Anna O’Donnell. Tourists and pilgrims mass to witness the girl who is said to have survived without food for months. Is the village harboring a saint ‘surviving on manna from heaven’ or are there more ominous motives at work?"
Pugh will be starring as Lib Wright with additional cast members including Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Elaine Cassidy, Kila Lord Cassidy, Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds, Dermot Crowley, Brian F. O’Byrne, and David Wilmot. The film is directed by Sebastian Lelio with a script by Lelio, Alice Birch, and Emma Donoghue.
Netflix also released a first look image of Pugh in the film.
What’s the most intriguing to me is how the film will take the historical fiction book and make it into a psychological thriller. The story of a girl who remains alive after not eating, how is that a thriller? Perhaps they’re going to add some unexplained magic into the mix, like some thought back in Victorian days. We’ll have to wait and see the trailer.
Selio announced his excitement to work with Pugh and bring the story to life.
"Bringing the powerful novel The Wonder by Emma Donoghue to the screen not only offers me the chance to portray the collision between reason and faith, individual and community, obedience and rebellion, but also to explore my own interpretation of what a “period” film can be. I couldn’t be more thrilled that the magnetic and courageous Florence Pugh will play our fierce female lead."
Let’s try chewing on that for a bit and try to figure it out what the could look like. If you’re on the Pugh train like many are, you can currently watch her be a sassy spy in Black Widow and wait for her other film that just finished filming, Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling.
What do you think about the story? Are you looking forward to it? Let us know!
