Huzzah! The second season of Hulu’s hilarious, historically inaccurate period comedy-drama The Great is officially headed our way this November.

The series, which loosely follows the story of Catherine the Great, chronicling her rise from outsider to the longest-serving female ruler in Russia’s history. Elle Fanning plays the titular Russian Empress, alongside Nicholas Hoult as her bumbling and generally ineffectual husband, Peter III.

When last we saw Russia’s rulers, Catherine had just kicked off a coup attempt against her husband, aiming to claim the throne – and Russia’s future – for herself. If the just-released teaser trailer is anything to go by, it looks as though she’s largely been successful, even if it also appears that Peter isn’t going to give up trying to overthrow her right back anytime soon.

Vengeance is just a part of married life, I guess.

Here’s the official synopsis for season 2, which will officially arrive on Hulu on November 19.

"In season two of The Great, Catherine finally takes the Russian throne for her own—but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it’s nothing compared to the realities of liberating a country that doesn’t want to be. She’ll battle her court, her team, even her own mother in a bid to bring the Enlightenment to Russia. Meanwhile, she’ll also battle her heart as Peter slowly transitions from a much-hated husband to a prisoner? Ally? Lover? Ultimately, Catherine will learn that to change a country, you must let it change you, that there is a fine line between idealism and delusion, and that becoming “Great” will ask more of her than she could have imagined."

But what, you might ask – didn’t the real Peter III die shortly after Catherine’s coup attempt took place? That is correct, but since we’ve already seen that The Great isn’t actually concerned with historical accuracy – the real Peter and Catherine come into their power until much later in their lives, and Peter’s wacky aunt Elizabeth was actually Empress in her own right prior to his reign – there’s every chance that Peter will stick around for quite some time to come.

(Which, if you ask me, is a good thing. Hoult and Fanning are magic together.)

Other notable figures returning for season 2 include Sacha Dhawan as Count Orlo, Phoebe Fox as Marial, and Gwilym Lee as Grigor Dymov.

The Crown’s Gillian Anderson is slated for a multi-episode guest appearance as Catherine’s mother Johanna Elisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp, who will arrive in Russia on a mission to save her family’s reputation. (There’s a blink and you’ll miss it glimpse of her in the above trailer.)
