Now is the time to look up Xolo Mariduena, Blue Beetle fans. The Cobra Kai actor is in negotiations to star as the titular comics hero, bringing more representation on screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mariduena is confirmed to be in talks with WB and HBO Max about taking on the role in what would be DC’s first film to center on a Latino superhero. Angel Manuel Soto is slated to direct with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer writing the script. There is not much else we know but is the Blue Beetle film is scheduled to start production in 2022.

Given the casting news, we’re suspecting that the version of Blue Beetle we’re going to see is Jamie Reyes. Created in 2006 by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, the Latinx teenager became the third iteration of the character. Reyes went on to work with Booster Gold, the Teen Titans, and even the Justice League.

There are no ideas where the plot could go and what other characters we could see in the film. Personally, I’m hoping we see some Teen Titans. Maybe they could even tie it into the Titans television verse. Booster Gold could also be a whole lot of fun, especially with the alien super-tech aspect. Avoiding the big names would be best. Introduce some fun new characters!

I think we can all appreciate the casting choice of Mariduena, an actor of Mexican, Cuban and Ecuadorian descent. We still need diversity in Hollywood and our media, so we’re here for any representation we can get. (While still demanding improvement.) Jaime Reyes is such a fan favorite so it also makes sense to use that character. A win-win, wouldn’t you say?
