Exciting news over in Batwoman world. Actress Victoria Cartagena has been cast to play popular Gotham City cop Renee Montoya. If her name sounds familiar when connected to this character, well, this isn’t the first time she’s donned the badge.

According to Entertainment Weekly, they’ve confirmed that Cartagena will in fact be playing Montoya in the upcoming third season Batwoman.

The actress was, understandably, incredibly excited and shared the news with her fans.

"I guess #Reneemontoya and I have some unfinished business. So very excited to join this new group of talented artists, writers & crew who are doing their thing over here! They have welcomed me wholeheartedly! Grateful, humbled, hype AF…"

We’re also hyped to be seeing her again. As some of you may remember, Cartagena first played the character on the FOX television series Gotham. The show featured a very young Bruce Wayne with a variety of adult villains thrown in the mix.

Victoria Cartagena will be playing Renee Montoya on Batwoman

Renee Montoya actually has a similar origin to Harley Quinn in that they both debuted on the incredibly popular show Batman: The Animated Series. The character has since gone on to achieve popularity in the comics, even becoming the faceless vigilante known as The Question at various points in her life.

This will be the second onscreen Montoya in recent memory since Rosie Perez played her in the 2020 film, Birds of Prey. There she was a disgruntled detective working among her sexist colleagues before quitting and joining up with the vigilante group full time. We’re unsure if we’ll see Perez in the role again but if Victoria Cartagena can do it – maybe she can, too!

One additional fun fact is that this will be the third time the actress has joined the superhero genre. Some fans may recognize her from her appearance in Jessica Jones as Sonia Arocho. Glad to see her back in the badge, though!

Here’s the official description of the character for the upcoming Batwoman season:

"A former GCPD officer, she left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the GCPD. She now runs the ‘freaks division,’ which hasn’t seen a lot of action… until now. Righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary."
