Gamers woke up this morning to find that Nintendo has finally announced a new version of the Nintendo Switch. Most people thought it would come during their E3 panel, but the company was unusually silent on it.

Instead, Nintendo dropped an announcement trailer. You can check it out below.

The upgraded Switch model has been rumored for quite a while, and gamers and fans alike have come up with insane theories of increased performance. Does this OLED model live up to the built-up hype?

Well… not really. Nintendo did confirm to The Verge that the Switch OLED model doesn’t have a new CPU or more RAM than either of the two other models, which is a little disappointing.

However, there are still some noticeable improvements. For a price tag that’s only $50 more than the standard model.

First off, the display is now a 7-inch OLED display, which will offer better colorization and lighting despite the resolution staying at 720p. We’re also getting enhanced audio in the form of newer, upgraded speakers.

We also get an upgrade to the onboard storage, which is up to 64GB from the original model’s 32GB. Not only that but the kickstand has been upgraded as well. If you have an original model, the kickstand is maybe an inch wide and on one side of the system. For the Switch OLED, it’s the entire length of the screen!

Lastly, there’s now a built-in wired LAN port on the end and an upgraded docking stand for the system as well.

The differences between the OLED and original model of the Nintendo Switch are pretty minimal. If you’re planning on using this new model as a handheld device more than plugging it into a TV, you’d be smarter to look into getting this version. If not, maybe be on the lookout for some Black Friday deals on original Switches this year.

One thought everyone seems to have is whether this means the original model of the Switch will slowly be phased out over the next year or so with Nintendo putting emphasis on the OLED and Lite versions of the console instead. We’ll just have to wait and see what they have in store!
