After the second season premiere hinted at a potential issue with Tuca and Bertie’s codependency, this week’s episode took the best friends out of their comfort zones on a road trip to Planteau, a seemingly flora and fauna Tuca & Bertie version of Las Vegas.

With Speckle’s sister, Dottie, getting married, Tuca and Bertie are quickly grouped up with Dottie’s friends for her bachelorette party while Speckle goes with Dottie’s fiance for his bachelor party.

A still sober Tuca is nervous about maintaining her sobriety in such a rowdy environment, while socially anxious Bertie is terrified of fitting in with Dottie and her friends, so naturally, the two codependent friends make a pact to help each other, with Bertie not drinking.

“Planteau”‘s biggest strength, though, is Speckle’s storyline, with a great voice performance by the always perfect Steven Yeun. Much like BoJack Horseman before it, Tuca & Bertie structurally offsets their more serious or primary A-plot with a high-concept off-the-wall B-plot.

In this week’s episode, that plot involved Speckle participating in a heist to help pay for the wedding in lieu of a bachelor party, and falling victim to hallucinogenic plants. Speckle’s storylines always allow for great comedic relief.

And with this episode, in particular, his story let Lisa Hanawalt’s trippier animation style shine through.

Overall, the episode handles both characters’ fears well, as Tuca quickly gets sucked into having fun and forgets to involve Bertie, leading Bertie to secretly drink in order to feel more confident. Of course, when Tuca finally catches her, the party is soon over as they have to confront their feelings.

It seems as though the season is going to focus on an overall arc of looking at Tuca and Bertie’s friendship more critically, both seeing how they are good for each other, but the ways in which they hold each other back, too.

As seen in “Planteau,” Tuca didn’t end up needing Bertie to be her “sober wing woman” (though the issue of Tuca’s sobriety may end up being tested later in the season), which ultimately means she may not need Bertie as much as Bertie needs her.

Where these two birds will end up throughout the course of this season remains to be seen.
