Sanditon, the popular period drama based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel was canceled at the end of 2019 – and on a cliffhanger no less! But thanks to a perfect storm of fan campaigning, sheer luck, and the timely arrival of Netflix’s wildly popular period romance Bridgerton, the series has received a surprising new lease on life – and a second season.

Sometimes miracles can still happen, it seems.

Yes, Sanditon season 2 is real, and though the series that returns might look a bit different from its first outing (more on that below), there’s still plenty for Austen fans everywhere to get excited about. After all, most of us had given hope on this ever even happening.

Below you can find our roundup of everything we know so far about the series’ unexpected renewal – including who’s returning from the season 1 cast, who isn’t, and when we might expect to see this small miracle on our screens.

Is Sandison season 2 happening?

Against what seems like all odds, yes! Despite the fact that the period drama was officially canceled in late 2019, Sanditon will indeed be back – and not just for a second season, but also a third!

It’s hard to overstate what an exciting and unexpected gift this is for Sanditon fans everywhere.

The series was unceremoniously canceled after a single season by U.K. network ITV – before it had ever even aired in America, in fact. And despite an extended fan campaign, many (perhaps even most) viewers had given up on ever seeing a resolution to the first season’s controversial ending that saw Sidney Parker break Charlotte Heywood’s heart and agree to marry an heiress in order to pay off his brother’s business debt.

Sanditon season 2 release date

While filming on Sanditon season 2 is expected to begin later this year in and around Bristol in the United Kingdom, there’s no word yet on when we might see new episodes on our screens.

Sanditon season 2 synopsis

Very little is known at the moment about what stories Sanditon seasons 2 and 3 might tell.

PBS’s initial description of the upcoming seasons is pretty basic but does promise more romance and adventure to come for Charlotte Heywood in the titular picturesque resort town.

"After fans were left hanging in suspense by the first season’s finale and clamoring for more, the drama will continue to follow the high-spirited and independent heroine, Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams, Curfew) as she returns to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon. Charlotte’s journey is one thread of an intricate tapestry of compelling stories full of intrigue, excitement, and romance. Against the backdrop of beautiful vistas, familiar faces return and new inhabitants are introduced — all of whom will be having adventures as joyous and surprising as the seaside town itself."

Sanditon season 2 cast

Given that so much time has passed between the airing of Sanditon’s first season, word of its initial cancellation, and the surprise announcement of its season 2 renewal, we’re not exactly sure what cast members will return when the series does. (After all, they’re all working actors who had assumed their show was ending – some of them found other jobs.)

Most importantly, however, it is at least confirmed that star Rose Williams will be returning as Charlotte for seasons 2 and 3. Williams’ presence as Sanditon’s central heroine is certainly the most necessary for the show’s future, so the announcement of her involvement is a huge relief.

Unfortunately, her primary co-star won’t be returning to the seaside in season 2.

Theo James, who played brooding romantic hero Sidney Parker, announced that his time with the show is finished and he won’t be back. The actor claims that the “broken fairytale between Sidney and Charlotte is different, unique, and so interesting” as an ending, but it also seems just as likely that his new role on the upcoming HBO Max series The Time Traveller’s Wife is partially to blame for his absence.

What this means for Charlotte’s romantic future is anyone’s guess at this point, and there’s no word whether Leo Suter, who played the handsome building Young Stringer will be back either. (Suter, as it turns out, has a fairly significant role on the upcoming Vikings spinoff Valhalla.)

Sanditon season 2 trailer

Since production on Sanditon season 2 won’t start until later this year, there’s no new footage to swoon over just yet and it will probably be some time before we see anything resembling a full trailer. But as soon as one is released, we’ll be sure to let you know!

Next. We're going back to Downton Abbey this Christmas. dark
