Tina Fey has struck gold again with Girls5Eva, a musical comedy that follows the members of a former 90s girl group of the same name, as they reunite to stage a comeback some 20 years later. While they only managed to score one hit in their heyday, the estranged quartet gets a second chance at fame when their song is sampled by an up-and-coming rapper.

Even though the women have all moved on to drastically different lives, they ultimately reconnect in order to help fulfill their dreams of superstardom. The 90s nostalgia plays a huge role in what makes this show such a fun binge from start to finish.

There is a lot to love about the series, starting with its immensely talented and charismatic cast. Sara Bareilles plays Dawn, the “chill one,” who has settled into a life of mediocrity but yearns to relive the excitement of being a pop star. Busy Phillips is Summer, the “hot one,” who has managed to parlay the group’s one-hit-wonder status, and her shaky “pop royalty marriage,” into a relatively lucrative career.

Paula Pell is Gloria, the “always working one,” who lived a closeted life during the 90s but eventually came out as a lesbian and became a dentist. Rounding out the group is Renee Elise Goldsberry as Wickie, the “fierce one,” who uses Instagram to portray her life as rich and glamorous, even though she is dead broke. The 90s nostalgia also plays a huge role in making this show such a fun binge from start to finish.

The chemistry between the lead characters is palpable, particularly between Broadway alums Bareilles and Goldsberry. Each character is given the proper amount to shine, with each having their own independent storylines in addition to the group coming back together

. The women all have a moment to stop and process where they are and what they are doing with their lives, leading them to question if it’s what they really want. The series spends its time going back and forth from depicting the girls in their heyday to the present, as they struggle to reconnect with each other and regain their former fame.

Anyone familiar with Tina Fey’s work will recognize the dry wit used throughout Girls5Eva. Sarcasm and dark humor abound, but there’s also something to be said about the camaraderie between the women.

Even after 20 years, they still manage to have each other’s back and unconditional love for each other that only grows stronger in their journey together. While they are all special in their own way, they truly become stars when they work together as a group. Special guest stars include Vanessa Williams, Andrew Rannells, Jimmy Fallon, and Tina Fey herself, who plays Dawn’s imaginary version of Dolly Parton.

The show does have a few minor misses, including a creepy former manager, but ultimately is a joy to watch and we can’t wait for season two. The series is comprised of eight, 30-minute episodes and airs on the NBC fledgling streaming platform Peacock. In fact, Girls5Eva is one of the few original series currently available on Peacock, along with the Saved By the Bell reboot.
