The season one finale of Invincible was nothing short of a total masterpiece. When fans thought episode 7 was the best it could get, this jaw-dropping finale blew everyone’s expectations away. Everything viewers knew or thought was flipped upside down as Omni-Man’s true motives were revealed and the integrity of Mark and Debbie Grayson was fully put on display.

The following will contain massive spoilers for season one of Invincible

Invincible is certainly not a typical superhero series, that much could be gathered from the premiere episode. The last 5 minutes of the first episode threw Twitter into an absolute frenzy. Even fans of the comic series cringed at the absolute carnage displayed on their screens. Words can’t describe the confusion and disgust brand new viewers had regarding the brutal demise of the Guardians of the Globe.

Among the new fans, two massive questions have been echoing throughout the fandom since the first episode and that is, “Who is Omni-Man and WHY did he do THAT?!”

The finale answered that and provided so much additional info that viewers were stunned and breathless. As it turns out, Omni-Man’s people aren’t all sunshine and rainbows after all. The Viltrumites are a group of people hellbent on dominating every planet and controlling absolutely everything. After murdering half of their own world’s citizens they labeled as weak, they decided to send one Vultrumite to each planet to conquer.

In one of the most shocking turns in a TV series, Omni-Man (Nolan Grayson) tells his son the brutal truth about everything and then tries to convince Invincible (Mark Grayson) that he must abandon everything he has ever known to carry on the mission of his “true people.” Omni-Man thought that his son would take his side and throw away everything he was taught growing up.

During Omni-Man’s reign on Earth, he didn’t realize he severely underestimated the power of Debbie Grayson and the wonderful son she raised.

There can be no arguments here, Debbie Grayson is one of the best mothers and characters, in general, to ever grace the TV screen. She may not have insane strength or the ability to fly but she is a superhero. She discovered the truth about her husband, and confronted him on it, and is still alive. She’s not naive and she will not pull any punches when it comes to her family. They might be able to take her physically, but mentally she is light years past them.

Omni-Man said some disgusting things about her in the finale that the fandom will never forgive him for, but it’s clear she means more to the grand scheme of things than what meets the eye. With Nolan off fighting crime, Debbie was the one to mainly raise Mark and instill a sense of morals in him. Even Mark states he is more like his mother. Clearly, it would have been easy for Mark to fall into the ways of his father, but he didn’t because of the amazing job his mother did raising him.

Omni-Man didn’t do himself any favors by parading around as a superhero, but the fandom is confident even if Debbie raised Mark totally alone he would still have an incredible heart. It goes deeper than that as well, the moment where Omni-Man is standing over Invincible about to give the final killing blow and then take over the world a memory lingers causing him to stop.

The dream sequence is a tear-jerker. It shows a young Mark Grayson playing baseball, and a slighter younger Debbie Grayson explaining why children are part of the best thing about being human. Viewers see a moment of humanity in the flashback and then in the current timeline as Omni-Man flies away from Earth abandoning his mission. While it’s obvious it won’t be the last time viewers see the Vultrimites, it’s clear that on some level Omni-Man cares, and it’s because of Debbie.

This season one finale of Invincible was emotionally taxing, to say the least, but at the end of the day, fans can rest knowing that for the time being Mark and Debbie Grayson are both alive. Invincible has also been renewed for seasons 2 and 3! There is no hard release date yet, but it’s extremely exciting to learn the Invincible fandom will have content for the next couple of years!
