The creator and head writer of the smash Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is currently developing a fourth installment in Marvel’s Captain America film franchise. Marcus Spellman will co-write the script with Dalan Musson, who served as a staff writer on the Marvel series. It is expected that the as-yet-untitled Captain America 4 will mark Sam Wilson’s big-screen debut as the titular hero.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally saw Sam suit up as Captain America for the first time, after a season-long journey to decide whether or not he even wanted to take up his friend Steve Rogers’ former mantle.

According to The Hollywood Reporterthe film has no director, cast, or release date attached as yet and Marvel Studios are being predictably silent on the subject.

There’s an interesting wrinkle here as well, in that rumors have been swirling for months that Chris Evans has come to some sort of agreement to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in a future Marvel project. Given the involvement of key players from Falcon and the Winter Soldier with this project, it seems likely that this Captain America 4 will be some sort of Sam vehicle that follows up on the events of the Disney+ series, while Evans’s Steve, should he return, will appear elsewhere.

Both Evans and Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige have denied those rumors, but this would hardly be the first time that someone involved in an MCU project has tried to insist they weren’t involved in a project that they were later tapped in to start in. (Love you, Tatiana Maslany.)

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s first episode was the most-watched Disney+ series premiere ever for the streaming service during its opening weekend. Though the season received mixed reviews from fans and critics, Anthony Mackie’s performance was strong throughout, and Sam’s complex journey to accepting the shield more than proves he’s a character that’s more than capable of continuing the story of Captain America on the big screen.
