We finally have a trailer for the third movie in The Conjuring franchise, and after the last few spin-off outings, we have our fingers crossed with this one. Following the success of the very first movie in this series, not only were we guaranteed a sequel (which we got and enjoyed), but there were also a few different spin-offs that have already graced our screens.

But at the end of the day, at its heart, this is a franchise about Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators whose entire life revolved around everything from possession to hauntings. And even with the Annabelle Comes Home having actually been set at the home of the Warrens, it didn’t really feel like they were a big part of the story (although their children were).

Now Ed and Lorraine are back and we are getting a chance to see one of their more infamous cases brought to life. In The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, we get the first case in U.S. history where demonic possession is used as a defense against murder.

In this first trailer, not only do we start off with a man looking confused wandering down the side of the road, but he is covered in blood. It turns out that he has apparently murdered someone in broad daylight. And thus begins an investigation that is beyond anything we have seen in The Conjuring universe to date.

Not only do we get to see law enforcement involved in a paranormal investigation, but this is a chance to really see Lorraine dig deep into her own abilities. The fact that she can feel and even see the “things that go bump in the night” means that she could be in serious trouble with this case. And of course, the trailer gives us a few clues to that as she is basically dragged off of the side of a cliff.

For the first time in a while, it looks like The Conjuring is getting back to what it did best at the very beginning – giving us a terrifying case where evil is at the heart of everything.

Maybe it is just me, but as a horror movie fan who actually enjoys the movies within The Conjuring franchise, I admit that I have been a bit disappointed with the last few movies (The Nun in particular). After seeing this new trailer, I have high hopes that we are going to be getting a thrilling ride with actual horror, suspense, and drama.

And if it also means more of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga on our screens, I am all for it!
