Paul Dano is set to play The Riddler in The Batman; however, after seeing David Tennant in the role it’s hard not to want to see Tennant take on the role!

After sitting on the sideline during Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Riddler will finally join the DC Extended Universe next year in The Batman.

The role was, of course, last played on the big screen way back in 1995 when Jim Carrey suited up as Edward Nygma/Riddler in Batman Forever. In the time since, The Riddler has appeared primarily in animated titles with the only other live-action appearance coming in FOX’s Gotham where the character was played brilliantly by Cory Michael Smith.

When The Batman finally opens in theaters in 2022, There Will Be Blood and 12 Years a Slave star Paul Dano will slip into the role as the DCEU’s new Riddler. As we’ve seen in the first trailer for the film, it seems The Riddler is going to step into the spotlight as one of the film’s foils to Robert Pattinson’s Batman which is sure to create a unique dynamic.

While fans are excited to see Dano tackle the role, there seems to be a large group within the DC fandom who are eager for another actor to get the chance to take on the role: David Tennant!

What David Tennant could look like as The Riddler in The Batman

One actor who many seem to really want to see take on the role of The Riddler in the future is Jessica Jones and Doctor Who star David Tennant. Thanks to artist William Gray, we’ve now been given our first look at just what Tennant could look like as The Riddler if given the chance!

In the jaw-dropping art, Tennant is transformed into The Riddler and it’s easy to see why fans are so interested in seeing him take on the role. While Gray interestingly leaves behind Riddler’s iconic green bowler hat and signature cane, the character’s signature look comes through via his sleek green and black suit complete with a question mark insignia.

Given how incredible Tennant was in the role of Kilgrave, another very cerebral villain, it’s not hard to understand why many are hoping to see Tennant pick up The Riddler mantle.

Although it’s unlikely we’ll see Tennant join the DCEU, we’d definitely love to see Tennant take on the role perhaps in a standalone feature similar to the Joaquin Phoenix-led film The Joker. This could allow DC the chance to bring Tennant into the fold for a standalone origin type feature while also still allowing Dano to shine within The Batman franchise. Sounds like a win-win for fans!
