In a rare move, streaming giant Netflix has handed out an additional two-season renewal to its megahit period drama Bridgerton ahead of the start of production on season 2.

This will keep the series going through at least season 4, and probably beyond if the massive numbers its first outing put up earlier this year is any indication. (The early renewal may also provide leverage in future contract discussions should another breakout star decide to depart the series, as Rege-Jean Page did following season 1.)

There are eight novels in author Julia Quinn’s series of Bridgerton novels. The first, The Duke and I, followed the story of the eldest daughter Daphne and her romance with Simon Bassett, the Duke of Hastings. The second, The Viscount Who Loved Me, is centered on eldest son Anthony and his search for love. It’s currently being adapted for the second season of the Netflix series, with a few relevant changes that continue the series’ intriguing explorations of period stories and race. (Anthony’s love interest is now Kate Sharma – rather than Sheffield – and her family will be canonically of Indian descent.)

Netflix announced the renewal news through a special missive from Lady Whistledown on Twitter.

There’s not much detail yet as to how the series plans to adapt the story of seasons 3 and 4. The corresponding novels in Quinn’s series – An Offer from a Gentleman (the Benedict book), Romancing Mr. Bridgerton (the Colin book), and To Sir Phillip, With Love (the Eloise book) all take place contemporaneously, so it’s possible the streamer might choose to combine them across two seasons rather than assigning each sibling a season of their own, as they have with Daphne and Anthony. Or, they might not. We’ll have to wait and see.

Either way, there’s so much Bridgerton goodness to look forward to over the next few years. And, most importantly: Colin/Penelope stans – Our time is nigh! Get hype!
