Hamilton star Renee Elise Goldsberry to join Disney+ She-Hulk series
By Lacy Baugher
Insert your own jokes about looking for a mind at work here: Angelica Schyler herself is reportedly joining the cast of Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk.
According to Deadline, actress Renee Elise Goldsberry is in talks to co-star opposite Tatiana Maslany in the upcoming drama, which follows the story of Jennifer Walters, an attorney who also happens to be Bruce’s Banner’s cousin and who inherits some of his Hulk powers after he gives her an emergency blood transfusion. Unlike her cousin, however, when Jennifer hulks out, she retains most of her personality and intelligence to go with her green skin and super strength.
Mark Ruffalo has already been confirmed to reprise his film role as Banner for the show, and the series recently cast Ginger Gonzaga as Walters’ best friend, whose name has not been confirmed but is most likely Jill Stevens.
The Hamilton star is said to be playing a character named Amelia, but it’s unclear at the moment who exactly this Amelia is supposed to be.
There are several Amelias in Marvel lore with connections to the She-Hulk story, most notably Amelia Voight, a mutant and SWORD agent who has several encounters with She-Hulk, and seems like a natural fit for a universe that’s busy introducing the concept of both those things.
But, there’s always a chance Goldsberry isn’t playing an established Marvel Comics character at all – or if she is, “Amelia” is a code name that will be eventually revealed as something else. (Remember Agatha Harkness was introduced to us all as Agnes on WandaVision!)
Goldsberry won a Tony Award for her performance in Hamilton and has recently been seen in a variety of small-screen roles, including on Altered Carbon and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
Dead To Me director Kat Coiro will helm the series pilot, as well as several other episodes, while Rick and Morty scribe Jessica Gao will lead the writers’ room.
No word yet on when we can expect to see She-Hulk on our screens yet, but anticipation for the drama is already building.
