Since Landon’s death during the Legacies episode “Hold On Tight,” Hope’s mission was to bring him back to life. She spent the following episodes searching for a way to reunite with Landon, each episode bringing out a more desperate side to her character.

Although there seems to be a point where she may be willing to accept Landon’s death and truly grieve him, that plan disappears when Hope learns that another Malivore monster, a Leprechaun, is at the Salvatore School.

In “Long Time, No See,” it looks like Hope will finally get the opportunity she’s been waiting for. After a vision suggesting Landon is alive and learning that the ascendant had been hidden by MG rather than destroyed, Hope has the ingredients necessary to search for Landon.

However, it isn’t as simple as jumping into the prison world. The prison world is filled with monsters and has Malivore trapped, something MG desperately wants to ensure stays that way. With their most powerful enemy locked away, MG suggests that the group take a breath and consider smarter ways to save Landon rather than rushing without a plan and possibly letting Malivore out, returning the group to square one.

Still, Hope is more interested in retrieving Landon than the consequences her actions could bring. When Lizzie decides against Hope’s plan, Hope goes around her, searching out Josie to help bring back Landon.

Unfortunately, she is not honest about her intentions with Josie. She allows Josie to believe that Lizzie was aware of Josie’s participation and that they would all be working together. Josie learns the truth soon after when Hope reveals that not only does she not have the ascendant, but that Lizzie did not want Josie to help.

When Lizzie appears, things really heat up and create one of Hope’s most controversial choices. The ascendant was covered in dark magic, something Josie had avoided since getting it removed from her body in season 2.

As the twins and Hope began to take in the dark magic, Hope did not let up and insisted they continue the spell, even after seeing what it was doing to the twins. It is one thing for Hope to be willing to put her own life at risk to save Landon, but at this moment, she also risked Josie and Lizzie’s lives for him.

There’s nothing wrong with Hope wanting to bring back Landon, and the lengths she would go to for him certainly speak for how much she cares. This is a moment that shows another, darker side of her. The dynamic she has with Landon has always been one of the biggest elements of the series, and it was not out of character for her to go all-in to save someone she cares about.

However, no one was arguing that they wanted to leave Landon in the prison world permanently. Everyone was on board with saving his life. Instead of working as a team with those who wanted to help, even if it was more safely, Hope steamrolled everyone, choosing her own path that could have hurt her friends.

Such a choice leaves big questions about her relationships with Josie, Lizzie, MG, and several others moving forward. She was willing to put their lives at risk for Landon, which is unlikely to be quickly forgotten. With Hope at odds with numerous people, there is an intriguing narrative that Legacies can create out of recent choices and the complex relationships between the characters.

With Josie and MG each suggesting that they will no longer attend the Salvatore School, and Lizzie saying she has no plans to follow Hope’s lead, it is questionable how many strong relationships Hope will have in the aftermath and if she will make things right with her friends.
