Warning: This article contains spoilers for Supergirl’s season 6 premiere titled “Rebirth.”

With Supergirl lost in the Phantom Zone, National City is going to need all the help it can get, so it’s a good thing another hero is about to join the fray.

In a recent Entertainment Weekly interview with showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner, it was revealed that Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai) will suit up in the role of Guardian at some point during the show’s final season. Guardian, of course, was the superhero alter-ego of her brother James, previously played by Mehcad Brooks, who departed the series in its fifth season. We previously saw Kelly wielding Guardians’ shield during the last Arrowverse crossover, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and saw her go full-fledged Guardian in one of the alternate universes depicted in the show’s 100th episode.

Up until now, Kelly had been relegated to the sidelines for most of the fighting in Supergirl, instead, her role has mostly been dedicated to being the girlfriend of Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) or the mental health professional assigned to oversee the development of Obsidian North’s VR technology. In the season 6 premiere, we were reminded that Kelly, while well aware of Alex’s life as a vigilante, still doesn’t know that Kara (Melissa Benoist) is Supergirl; a liability pointed out by Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) himself.

This is wonderful news, as Tesfai’s character has brought a much-needed calming and empathetic presence to the show, though she hasn’t always been given the best material to work with.

With all of the changes to the show set up in the final season premiere, including Lena (Katie McGrath) becoming a part of the Super Friends again and Alex officially getting a codename and a seat at the Justice League table, the news of Kelly taking up the mantle as Guardian is the cherry on top. If this is any indication of how the rest of Supergirl‘s final season is going to play out, fans are in for one hell of a send-off.
