Grey’s Anatomy has a reputation for killing off many of its popular lead characters, but thankfully for fans the writers have clever ways of bringing fan favorite characters back to life. This time around, Chyler Leigh will return in a cameo appearance as Lexie Grey during the April 1 episode.

Season 17 has been full of cameos from those who have gone on to the the great Seattle Grace in the sky courtesy of Meredith’s battle with COVID-19. While Meredith is in a coma, her mind is on a beach having conversations with old friends who have died.

One of the biggest surprise appearances of the series came when Meredith came face to face with her deceased husband Derek – McDreamy himself, Patrick Dempsey – in the early days of her coma, and she also saw George (T.R. Knight) in one of her dreams, too.

Leigh’s return will mark the first time she’s been on the show since season 7, when Lexie Grey succumbed to her injuries after a tragic plane crash that eventually took the life of her lover Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane).

Grey’s Anatomy employs clever tricks to bringing back old characters

Grey’s Anatomy has always been a revolving door for characters as doctors either leave for other jobs, like Sandra Oh’s Christina Yang, or they are killed off like Derek Shepherd and George O’Malley. No one is safe on the show, which has already demonstrated that it means business when it comes to killing off main characters with abandon.

Thankfully, as much as they kill off characters, they also find ways to bring them back. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Denny Duquette won fans over, so after he died he came back as a “ghost” to haunt Izzy Stevens (Katherine Heigl), but in reality he was a hallucination of her cancer.

Meredith Grey is fighting for her life after contracting COVID-19, but her illness has made it possible for fans to see former members of the cast and it has been very refreshing after all these years.
