It’s official: NBC’s Mr. Mayor will return for a second season.

Created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the freshman comedy stars Ted Danson as Neil Bremer, a wealthy businessman who runs for mayor of Los Angeles for all the wrong reasons and somehow manages to win. Following his unexpected triumph, he must figure out precisely what he actually stands for, gain the respect of his biggest critic, and connect with his teenage daughter, all while trying to manage life in La-La Land.

The series also stars Holly Hunter as Bremer’s biggest critic turned deputy mayor;  Bobby Moynihan as Jayden Kwapis, Neil’s communications director; Vella Lovell as chief of staff Mikaela Shaw; and Mike Cabellon as chief strategist Tommy Tomás.

“Having Ted Danson and Holly Hunter leading this brilliant ensemble is a dream,” said Lisa Katz, NBCUniversal’s president of scripted content. “A huge thank you to Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and our talented cast and crew for an incredible first season. We are excited for more hilarity in Season 2.”

Production on season 1 was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns last spring and the series only managed to film nine of its original thirteen-episode order. Its first season finale aired on February 25.

This is the first comedy renewal of the season for NBC, which touted the digital and delayed viewing success of the pilot, which was the network’s best comedy launch in Live+7 day viewers since the Will and Grace revival premiered in 2017.

“We’ve loved our collaboration with NBC on the first season of Mr. Mayor and are excited to continue working with our fantastic cast, led by the incomparable Ted Danson and Holly Hunter,” said Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television: “We can’t wait to see what Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and our talented producing team have in store for Mayor Bremer and his ragtag team of civil servants.”

The first season of Mr. Mayor is now streaming on Peacock.
