2021 Oscars: Check out the full list of Academy Award nominees
The 2021 awards season is already in full swing, and this week kicked off with The Academy announcing the nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards, which are set to take place on April 25. Despite the past year having significantly less theatrical releases thanks to the COVID-19 health crisis, there were plenty of great VOD and streaming releases to speak of.
The 2021 Oscars nominees covers most of the hotly discussed films that have come out over the past year, with The Father, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Nomadland, Mank, Judas and the Black Messiah, and more big releases receiving nominations in multiple categories.
There are a few noteworthy nominations on the list, including two women — Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell — up for Best Director. This category has historically snubbed women, and while two female directors is hardly enough to make up for years of overlooking them, it’s a start.
Steven Yeun is also the first Asian American nominated in the category of Best Actor, receiving the nom for his role as Jacob in Minari.
As with every year, there were some pleasant surprises and some unpleasant ones in the announcements. However, it does seem the Oscars are pushing ever so slightly toward diversifying the nominees — even if it’s not happening quite so quickly as most movie buffs would like.
