The city of Townsville will be in excellent hands. The CW has announced the lead actresses cast in the network’s upcoming live-action reboot of the beloved 90s cartoon, The Powerpuff Girls.

Chloe Bennet, last seen as the superhero Quake on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, has been cast in the role of Blossom, Dove Cameron (Descendants) will be assuming the part of Bubbles, and Broadway actress Yana Perrault will be playing Buttercup. Ironically, Bennet and Cameron starred opposite each other in the fifth season of Agents of SHIELD, in which Cameron’s character was a villainous sociopath obsessed with Quake.

The new series reimagines the trio as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to superheroics, but are forced to work together again to save the world. The network provided updated character descriptions of each of the main characters to get us up to speed. Blossom is now a recluse dealing with PTSD from the trauma of her violent childhood, who is reluctant to lead once again. Bubbles grew up being America’s sweetheart and is initially more interested in recapturing her fame than actually saving the world. Buttercup is the rebellious badass of the team but has spent most of her adult life trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity to live an anonymous life.

Juno and Young Adult screenwriter Diablo Cody is set to pen the series, along with Heather Regnier, as well as executive producer for the series. Cody previously worked with Perrault on the Broadway show Jagged Little Pill, based on Alanis Morrissette’s debut album of the same name. Arrowverse guru Greg Berlanti will also executive produce, along with Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Veteran television director Maggie Kiley (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Impulse) will be directing the pilot episode.

The original Powerpuff Girls was an animated series that aired on the Cartoon Network from 1998-2005. At first, the show was a bit of a cult hit, but quickly became part of mainstream pop culture thanks to its fresh take on the superhero cartoon, along with a mix of humor made for adults as well as children. There was an attempt to reboot the animated series in 2016 but didn’t quite become the same success as the original. Let’s hope Bennet & Co. have better luck this time around.
