Kalinda Vazquez could become first woman to write a Star Trek feature
Fear the Walking Dead fans know Kalinda Vazquez from her work on AMC’s zombie spinoff, but she’s been a figure in the Star Trek Universe for a while now and she’s been tapped to write a script for a possible new movie. Should the movie get a green light from Paramount, she’ll make history as the first woman to write the script for a Star Trek feature film.
The new Star Trek project is one of many in the works over at Paramount, which is going all-in on the franchise with a combination of new live-action series, animated series and plans for feature films in various states of development. Vazquez is working on a script that will be an original story with J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot behind it.
At this point, if Vazquez is able to move ahead with her script, she’ll be the first woman to write a Star Trek feature and it’s about time.
Kalinda Vazquez is no stranger to the Star Trek universe
Vazquez served as a co-executive producer on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead in 2018, with writing credits for two of the six episodes she produced. She’s also worked on Runaways and Once Upon a Time, as well as the cult-classic Nikita in the early 2010s.
She’s no stranger to Star Trek, though, having written episodes for Star Trek: Discovery (“Terra Firma, part 2”) and Star Trek: Short Treks (“Ask Not”). She served as consulting producer on six episodes of Discovery from 2020 to 2021.
The announcement doesn’t reveal which era of the show she will be working with or which characters fans might see in her script. With so much focus on reboots, the sky’s the limit for new adventures within the universe. (Though we’re hoping it’s set in The Next Generation universe because there are so many adventures left to tell there!)
Once Paramount gives Vazquez’ script the green light then there will be more details available about her movie and where she’s taking the story. For now, though, our fingers are crossed that a woman finally gets to pen a Star Trek feature film.
