Disney+ crashes amid the demand for the WandaVision finale

To the surprise of no one, Disney+ couldn’t handle the demand on the system as soon as the season finale of WandaVision became available at 3am ET on Friday morning. Despite the late hour, legions of fans have been staying up (or waking up early) to watch each new episode and the demand crashed the Disney+ streaming service.

It’s not surprising that Disney+ was overwhelmed by excited fans on Friday morning. Not only is there a desire to see how Wanda’s story turns out after all of the revelations in episode 8’s “Previously On,” there’s also the strong desire to be able to avoid spoilers by watching each new episode as it becomes available to avoid spoilers.

As viewers tuned into the streaming on Friday morning, they were met with an error message: “We’re sorry, but we cannot play the video you requested. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Disney+ support(Error Code 39).”

The error message is a huge bummer, but it’s not exactly surprising that the system would crash amid the excitement for the finale of the first Marvel series at Disney+.

Unlike Netflix, which generally drops new shows a season at a time, Disney+ chose to go with a traditional weekly release strategy that paid off because fans keep coming back for more. In fact, streaming ratings reflect the power of word of mouth and delayed views because WandaVision is climbing the Nielsen streaming ratings with every passing week.

Wanda’s story will definitely continue in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The events of WandaVision have shaken her to the core, so there’s no telling which version of Wanda Maximoff fans will end up with. There’s also no telling whether the series will continue into a second season.
