It’s premiere week, Dam Fam! Come Tuesday, a couple of hours shy of midnight, we will have been reunited with our beloved New Amsterdam crew. That’s right, on March 2 at 10 PM, New Amsterdam will return to NBC for its third season.

Now, as a reminder, this golden-hearted medical drama has already been given the green light for two additional seasons, so we’re going into season 3 with the guarantee of a season 4. How that’ll shape the story, if at all, we don’t know, but here’s what you can expect on New Amsterdam this season.

We’ve been speculating for a while about what storylines from season 2 the show would circle back to since the writers didn’t get the chance to tie up hanging plots due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Thanks to the official trailer for New Amsterdam season 3 we finally have some answers. Just enough to have us speculating once more.

Watch the official trailer for New Amsterdam season 3 below:

New Amsterdam season 3 promises major changes for Max and his team

Last season, the New Amsterdam team lost Reynolds to San Francisco as he and Evie moved to the west coast. He was the most pragmatic of the hospital’s doctors, often a counterpoint to the team’s idealistic tendencies. A position that found him at odds more than once with his colleagues over the ways they’d attempt to skirt the realities of their industry, their work environment, and the limits of their occupation.

If Reynolds doesn’t make a return, New Amsterdam‘s core doctors won’t be all idealists considering the recent addition of Dr. Cassian Shin played by Daniel Dae Kim, but we’ll definitely be feeling his absence especially since Max is determined to overhaul the entire medical care system in the wake of the COVID crisis.

We’re not sure how Max is going to attempt or achieve such a feat, but he’s always tried to be “all of the above.” It’s who he is as a doctor and a man. Being that near superhuman person, however, nearly cost him his marriage to his wife Georgia in season 1, and her death put his character in a grief arc that spanned the entirety of the second season.

Max is a single father and the medical director of a public hospital in a major city. The pandemic is going to wreak havoc on his parenting choices, his ability to believe he’s made the right decisions for himself and his daughter Luna, and his inability to handle being unable to fix a situation. Hence promising Sharpe that he’s going to change the system for both her and Luna.

Yes, we did swoon at that grand declaration in the trailer. We also didn’t miss the brief recap including Max’s reaction to finding out Sharpe gave up half her department to ensure he got the medical care he needed for his cancer. The scene screamed near-miss love confession and, with Sharpe dating Shin this season, it’s got us thinking Sharpwin fans are going to be seeing some romantic progress for the two best friends.

It looks like we’re also going to be seeing progress in both Iggy and Bloom’s respective storylines. Thank goodness! When season 2 came to an abrupt close, the show was still working to give us answers on Iggy’s disordered eating, his narcissism diagnosis by a colleague, and his marital problems due to a failed adoption attempt that revealed Iggy’s avoidance of confrontation often put his husband Martin in tough and emotionally stressful situations.

With the pandemic storyline being a major part of the season, we’re sure to see how the virus has affected Iggy’s home life and his own mental health considering he wasn’t in a good place prior to the health crisis. In contrast, Bloom’s life was looking up. The show didn’t spend the time it needed on the healing relationship between her and her mother, but we left Bloom in a healthy spot in season 2.

She’s a recovering addict who has concerns about memory loss due to her abuse of Adderall, but she was assured by Vijay that her memory is fine and her work hasn’t be inhibited. Since that scene was in the recap, we’re assuming Bloom’s suspected memory issues may come up again. And, considering what we know about Vijay’s impending hospitalization, we know the two, and the rest of the team, are going to be tied together by his health crisis.

As always, Dam Fam, have your tissues on standby. We’re sure the New Amsterdam season 3 premiere is going to be one part heartwarming and two parts emotional. Get ready, our show is coming back with a kicker!
