Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse is one of the most popular fantasy worlds in the YA category, and it’s television adaptation is finally arriving on Netflix this April. And the streamer generated some hype leading up to the show’s release by releasing exclusive images and posters several weeks ago, but those have nothing on the first official trailer that dropped today.

Opening with an introduction to the Shadow Fold — an expanse of darkness that has quite literally torn the nation of Ravka in two — the first look at Shadow and Bone wastes no time showing viewers what the series’ protagonist, Alina Starkov, can do. And her mysterious ability to control light — and wield it against the Fold’s darkness — raises more than a few eyebrows as the trailer sets up Alina’s storyline.

Of course, although the majority of the footage focuses on the story’s introduction, it does offer some glimpses of the other characters we’ll be following in this new fantasy show. Ben Barnes’ General Kirigan — better known to book readers as the Darkling — is shown questioning Alina after her newfound powers emerge. And Mal, of course, gets a few moments to show concern for his longtime friend.

The Six of Crows gang is also briefly shown, and whatever Kaz, Jesper, and Inej are up to, it looks like fans won’t have to wait for another season to see them stirring up trouble in the Barrel. Although the Ketterdam-based gang is unlikely to live out the events of Bardugo’s duology during this first season of Shadow and Bone, the trailer suggests they’ll still have an action-packed storyline in the coming episodes. What that will involve is anyone’s guess.

All in all, the first look at Netflix’s newest fantasy series promises a faithful and satisfactory adaptation of Bardugo’s beloved novels. (With any luck, it’ll be a long-running one as well.)
