Most discussion about Zack Snyder nowadays involves the Snyder Cut of 2017’s Justice League, but that’s not the only project the director has coming out this year. Snyder’s Army of the Dead has landed a May release date at Netflix — and the film promises to put a bonkers spin on the typical zombie movie by meshing it with a heist story.

Written by Snyder, Shay Hatten, and Joby Harold, Army of the Dead will follow a group of mercenaries, all of whom decide that pulling of an epic heist is totally worth venturing into a city overrun with zombies — and, I mean, if the price is right, I guess who can blame them?

Snyder is no stranger to zombie stories, though it’s been a while since he directed Dawn of the Dead. Still, all the directorial experience he’s gotten since then — in multiple genres, no less — is bound to show in this genre-bending film.

Snyder shared a poster for Army of the Dead on Twitter, promising a teaser would arrive sometime this week.

What else we know about Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead is a character-driven film that will feature an ensemble cast, which includes stars like Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Matthias Schweighöfer, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Hiroyuki Sanada, Nora Arnezeder, Garret Dillahunt, and Tig Notaro.

The film has also already been greenlit for a spin-off series following Schweighöfer’s character, underscoring that Netflix believes Snyder’s latest project will be a success.

Whether or not the streamer is correct in its projections remains to be seen, but given the publicity surrounding Snyder’s Justice League over at HBO Max, it’s probably safe to say fans will want to check this out as well. And with a premise like a zombie heist, how could they not?
