The Leftovers star Justin Theroux is giving television viewers a new mystery to solve in his upcoming Apple TV+ show, The Mosquito Coast. The trailer for the drama series dropped last week, and it looks every bit as intense as its synopsis would suggest.

Based off the novel of the same name — written by Paul Theroux, Justin’s uncle — Mosquito Coast follows an inventor on the run from the U.S. government. Naturally, his family isn’t thrilled about the situation that’s unfolding — and it looks like it’s going to take every bit of effort on Allie’s part to prevent his loved ones from getting hurt. According to the show’s official synopsis:

"“From award-winning novelist and creator Neil Cross and based on the best-selling book by Paul Theroux, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, “The Mosquito Coast” is a gripping adventure and layered character drama following the dangerous journey of a radical idealist and brilliant inventor, Allie Fox (played by Justin Theroux), who uproots his family for Mexico when they suddenly find themselves on the run from the U.S. government.”"

The Mosquito Coast trailer teases a mystery at the heart of the show

Although the synopsis tells us who Allie and his family are running from in The Mosquito Coast, neither the description nor the trailer tell fans why Allie is being hunted. It must be a pretty huge reason for him to put his own family at risk — which presents something that could be the central mystery of the show: What did Allie discover — or create — to piss off the government this much?

Viewers don’t appear to be the only ones in the dark, either, as the footage sees Allie’s daughter and wife asking why he’s putting them through all this. Whatever secret he’s holding onto, it sounds bad — bad enough to drive the group to Mexico anyway.

Judging by the footage, escaping to another country may not solve all of Allie’s problems either. It’ll be interesting to see what’s at the heart of this series and how his story unfolds when The Mosquito Coast finally arrives.
