The School for Good and Evil: Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington join the cast
The Netflix adaptation of Soman Chainani’s best-selling story The School for Good and Evil is rounding out its cast with heavy-hitting actresses Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington joining the team.
The School for Good and Evil is based on the tale of two best friends, Sophia and Agatha, who find themselves at the mysterious School for Good and Evil. They are put to the test as they try to find a way home and back to their old lives, navigating the complexities of the school, a training ground for young people to become fairy tale heroes and villains.
Theron will play Lady Lesso and Washington will bring Professor Dovey to life. Sophia Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie have already been announced as Sophia and Agatha, respectively.
Director Paul Feig made the announcement on Twitter, noting “I know what school I’m applying to” in his message to fans. “So thrilled to welcome Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington to the School for Good and Evil. Everyone, prepare to get schooled!”
The School for Good and Evil could be a new powerhouse for Netflix
Like other streamers, Netflix is hoping to find new properties that it can develop into powerhouses like Stranger Things. The School for Good and Evil comes with a built-in fan base and lots of enthusiasm for its cast, making it a win-win all around.
David Magee and Laura Solon wrote the screenplay, which was originally set for production at Universe until Netflix stepped in last year and picked it up. Chainani’s story is part of a six-book series, and if the first book does well there’s every reason that Netflix could adapt the rest of the series in their quest to acquire original IP to develop.
The School for Good and Evil is currently in production in Ireland and is expected to debut on Netflix in 2022.
