The cast of DC Universe’s upcoming The Flash continues to grow and it has been announced that Sasha Calle will fill the role of Supergirl for the movie. Calle, who is known for her Emmy-nominated work on The Young and the Restless, hails from Boston but has strong Colombian roots, making her the first Latina cast as Superman’s cousin.

Several hundred women auditioned for the role and in the end director Andy Mushchietti said that with Calle they found “an actress who was destined to play this role.”

Calle was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama category thanks to her work as Lola Rosales on The Young and the Restless. She also appeared in Socially Awkward on YouTube.

With news of the casting, The Flash continues to gain momentum as it speeds toward its 2022 release.

The Flash movie finds its Supergirl as the cast continues to grow. Who is next?

Supergirl has only appeared on the big screen one time before, back in 1984’s adaptation featuring Helen Slater in the title role. She has appeared on the small screen several times, most recently portrayed by Melissa Benoist.

Calle joins an already impressive cast of characters including Ezra Miller, who returns to the role he originated with a cameo Batman v Superman ahead of his official debut in Justice League. Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton will both take up the mantle of the Batman as well.

Given the movie’s ability to play with time and alternate universes, though, the possibility for other DC characters to show up increases. There has been a lot of interest in Michelle Pfeiffer reprising her role as Catwoman from 1992’s Batman Returns, and with the multiple universes it’s possible that Calle could come face to face with Benoist in the film as well.

It will be a lot of fun to see how Calle develops this role, and there’s every reason to hope that Supergirl’s appearance in The Flash is the start of something big for Superman’s beloved cousin Kara in future standalone films.
