‘And Just Like That’, Mr. Big won’t appear in the Sex and the City spin-off
For fans of HBO’s megahit Sex and the City, there were several running stories that played out over the seasons. One was the friendship between the core characters, and another was Carrie’s on-again, off-again relationship with Mr. Big. According to Page Six, Mr. Big actor Chris Noth won’t be returning to HBO’s recently announced revival, And Just Like That…and just like that, the possibilities for Carrie’s future have taken an intriguing turn.
Sex and the City fans have been buzzing about the revival that will see Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristen Davis and Cynthia Nixon return as their BFF alter egos Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda. The gal pals are now in their 50s and they’re still navigating the complexities of friendship and life after their many years together.
Though details about the plot remain scarce, there are a few things that have already been confirmed: Kim Cattrall will not return as Samantha Jones, and now it seems as though Mr. Big won’t be back either. Miranda’s husband Steve, played by David Eigenberg, might make an appearance as the actor is reported to be in talks for a return.
While news of Cattrall’s absence wasn’t surprising given her less than lukewarm feelings about Parker and the show, Noth’s absence could signify more than a few changes to the story.
Mr. Big won’t appear in the Sex and the City revival and that changes things
Technically speaking, Mr. Big doesn’t need to be in And Just Like That because all indications point to the show’s focus on the women and their friendships. The key is how they explain away Mr. Big’s absence given that the last time we saw Big and Carrie they were happily reunited and still married.
Sure, writers can refer to Big when he’s not around and that will work for a while. But it’s far more likely that Carrie will have divorced her husband, or he will have passed away and she’s now a widow, and that will tie into the story as she reinvents herself.
Then again, you never know about cameos. Noth might have opted out but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t show up at some point in a cameo to reassure fans that Carrie and Big are still going strong.
You never know how things will play out, but one thing is for sure: The Sex and the City team wouldn’t come back to television without a story to tell, and it will be an interesting story whether Big is there or not.
