Amazon orders Mr. and Mrs. Smith series with Donald Glover, Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Meet the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. That’s right, Amazon is rebooting the 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, this time as a television series. The film was initially intended to be made into a series at ABC in the mid-2000s, but it was never ordered to pilot. Fortunately, it seems like interest in the franchise has been renewed, particularly now that two well-known names are attached to it.

According to Deadline, both Waller-Bridge and Glover revealed via Instagram that they were working on a Mr. and Mrs. Smith series, which is currently slated to arrive sometime next year. Francesca Sloane is serving as co-creator on the series, which will be a joint effort between Amazon Studios and New Regency. Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, and Jenny Robins are set to executive produce.

Waller-Bridge already has plenty of experience working with Amazon Studios, where she starred in and created the Emmy-winning series Fleabag. She has an overall deal with Amazon Studios, which this new project will be a part of. Waller-Bridge has also worked with her co-star previously, with both of them involved in Solo: A Star Wars Story. 

Outside of his role as Lando Calrissian, Glover has voiced Simba in Disney’s live-action The Lion King, starred in and created FX’s Atlanta, and starred in and created Amazon’s musical film Guava Island. He also has a musical career under the name Childish Gambino.

The 2005 version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith saw a seemingly ordinary couple keeping careers as assassins from one another, leading to plenty of drama and action once they’re assigned to kill each other. Whether the television series will cover similar territory or take on another plot remains to be seen. Currently, not much is known about the narrative direction.

Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke is excited about bringing the property to life, however. “Mr. and Mrs. Smith is an iconic property, and we can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe, and Francesca make it their own,” she said in a statement obtained by Variety. “We’re thrilled to be working with them, and with such great partners at New Regency.”

Amazon’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith series will reportedly arrive in 2022, though no official release date has been revealed just yet.
