There’s a new Paranormal Activity reboot in the works at Paramount and creator Oren Peli and horror guru Jason Blum are attached as producers with Will Eubank directing and Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) working on the script. The Hollywood Reporter revealed the exclusive news and honestly the idea of rebooting the series is intriguing.

While Hollywood has been toeing the line (or crossing the line) of too many reboots, the idea of rebooting Paranormal Activity really isn’t a bad one. The reason the first movie was such a massive hit and is still considered one of the most profitable movies ever made is that it was a simple concept that was executed in a very simple way.

A family is being terrorized by a mysterious force, and the action is captured by video cameras strategically placed around the house. Over the years, new films in the franchise embraced new technology like cell phone cameras, gaming consoles and home security systems.

One of the reasons the movies struck such a nerve is that all of this technology is available to just about everyone these days. The whole concept was very accessible and relatable. (I mean, who doesn’t look at that blurry smudge in Aunt Edna’s birthday video and wonder what it could be?)

There is no word on what the plot of the reboot will be, but there is no end to the possibilities.

Paranormal Activity is the kind of movie franchise that would benefit from a reboot

Not all movies need reboots. With Paranormal Activity, the original franchise is timeless enough so that anyone can watch and still get the same scares as someone watching when the movie was first created. The technology is becoming outdated, but the story still works and if nothing else the outdated technology actually makes the jump scares scarier.

A rebooted Paranormal Activity could either follow the path of the original, with a carefully weaved story about a poltergeist attached to a family, or it could blaze a new trail with its own mythology tied to the PA mythos.

Today’s technology will only serve to play a bigger role in the movies (think app-based security cameras where you can see the action from your phone while you’re on the other side of the world) and if it’s done properly it will complement the series in a big way.

The new Paranormal Activity reboot is destined to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
