In a surprising move, the CW announced late Friday that it was not moving forward with the Wonder Girl series that would have featured the first Latina superhero leading a DC Comics television series.

Dailyn Rodriguez announced the news on social media, thanking fans for their enthusiasm but confirming that “Wonder Girl is not getting picked up at the CW.”

Rodriguez, the Queen of the South executive producer and co-showrunner, wrote the pilot for Wonder Girl and was to serve as executive producer along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Berlanti is tied to multiple shows across the DC Universe at the CW and now on HBO Max and it’s odd that a show he was tied to was shot down considering his incredible track record with the network and the studio, and the huge step Wonder Girl would have taken for representation among superheroes.

Wonder Girl follows the story of Yara Flor, whose lineage stems from an Amazon Warrior and a Brazlian River God. As the new Wonder Girl, she must learn how to use her power to protect the innocent and save the world from evil.

Could Yara Flor and Wonder Girl have a future at HBO Max?

As a Latina Dreamer, Yara Flor would have been the first Latina superhero leading her own television series. Her story is based on characters from Joelle Jones’ Future State: Wonder Woman story that debuted in January 2021.

Now that the CW has passed on the series, it’s possible that the pilot could get a second chance with HBO Max, especially because the new streaming service is home to DC original programming like Doom Patrol, Titans and Harley Quinn.

The CW was once the exclusive home to DC TV but the times are changing and it could benefit HBO Max to develop Wonder Girl on its own, giving the show the kind of budget it needs to be successful.

News that Wonder Girl won’t be coming to the CW is disappointing, but there’s every reason to hope that the show might find new life at HBO Max, especially after Wonder Woman 1984 brought so much success to the streamer during its premiere. For now, it’s a matter of waiting to see what happens but we certainly hope that Yara Flor has a chance to take flight.
